We’re in the desert this week, hiking and writing songs mainly (with a sound bath thrown in), a routine we’ve been repeating for nearly a decade. We get a place in or around Joshua Tree and both vacation and write new material. One of Bay Station’s recordings, Other Desert Cities, was the fruit of several such trips. After we figured out the songs for that record, we even returned to Joshua Tree with our bandmates to record basics at the songs’ birthplace.
The desert always works on us in different ways. I know I sink into something elemental, beyond my human mind and perhaps even this lifetime. Which is why I’m highlighting “Sleeping Hard, Waking Slow” from ODC, a song that really isn’t necessarily sung from my current perspective.
